A healing and nurturing ritual for the postpartum period
"Hips open during pregnancy, becoming wider and wider, and after the birth it is paramount to help close them back to their normal width, otherwise mothers suffer from pelvic instability and leak energy. Rocio Alarcon attributes the many women suffering from hip issues in our society to the lack of closing the bones massages post birth."
"In Ecuador, women are given this massage within hours of the birth, and receive it again at least 5 or 6 times during the first 40 days postpartum. The massage stimulates blood flow which in turn; cleans, renews, moves fluids (may help with milk supply/lochia), moving hormones, immune system, toning muscles and tissue. In traditional cultures, the 41 days of the postnatal period represent a sacred time. In this time the woman will have the closing massage at least 5 times, the first being 6 hours after birth, this begins to put the bladder and uterus back into place." Maddie McMahon
"The massage itself includes sifting with a rebozo, using the rebozo for closing the hip bones, and using various hand massage techniques using oil around the pubic bones, belly and around the hips."
"Beyond the physical aspect of closing the bones, there is a spiritual aspect to the massage, which provide a safe space/ritual for the mother to feel nurtured and release emotions associated with the birth and motherhood, even many years after the birth itself." Sophie Messager
I was taught this traditional massage by 2 wonderful and experienced Doulas, Sophie Messager and Maddie McMahon, who in turn were taught by Rocio Alarcon, an Ethnobotanist, healer, shaman and traditional midwife from Ecuador. She lives in the UK and teaches all around the world. She has a PhD in Ethnobotany, but the most valuable part of her knowledge she gained from her mother and grandmother, and from tribal people in Ecuador. There is a depth knowledge in her, a wisdom that is the product of many generations of ancestral knowledge. This type of knowledge simply cannot be gained through university training.
I am honoured to have deepen my knowledge and learning advanced manta* and closing the bones techniques with Rocio Alarcon.

"Even though I gave birth almost 2,5 years ago I still didn't felt like I completely healed, but I couldn't figure out what was missing. Satu did the massage which was very nice, some parts of the muscles needed a bit more massaging which was uncomfortable in the beginning - but you know how that goes with a massage - you have to work through those knots. The few days after the massage I started noticing feeling different. Somehow I feel like I am smaller, like my body is pulled together, like my hips aren't pointing open/outwards anymore. I guess that is why they call it 'Closing The Bones'.
Lovely ritual that anyone that gave birth should definitely do! Thank you for your beautiful gift Satu <3. You are a true blessing for mothers everywhere in this world. xx
