Questions and Answers

ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WISE HIPPO ?

HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

Q. What is the difference between The Wise Hippo and Hypnobirthing?

I teach The Wise Hippo Birthing programme which uses hypnosis techniques. There are many birthing programme that use hypnosis that are collectively labelled Hypnobirthing. The Wise Hippo has a unique approach as we do not focus on one specific way of birthing with one specific outcome. We appreciate that every woman has unique needs, wants and concerns about their baby’s birth and we teach with this in mind. This in turn enables each woman to prepare for their baby’s birth in a way that feels right for them and ultimately to achieve the right birth on the day.

Q. When should I start the classes?

You can start classes as soon as you are in your second trimester, it is never too late to start, as long as you can finish the course before you

give birth. Although the success of the course is strongly linked to how much practice you do, even if you would do the course near your due date, it's still going to help.

Q. My baby is due very soon. Is it too late to do the classes?

It is never too late to prepare yourself for your baby’s birth! Please contact me and let me know when you are due and we can work out a plan of action. I will be as flexible as possible to accommodate your requirements.

We recommend attending the class over 4 weeks but this can be taught in a shorter time frame if necessary. If you feel the full course is not possible in the time you have left then we can look at alternative options such as the one off “Relax, Breathe and Birth” class. Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss your options – I will help you as much as I can!

Q. Who is the programme suitable for?

For all mothers and their birth partners. Yes it really is suitable for all!

Q. I am having an induction, c section or intervention – will the Wise Hippo Birthing Programme be right for me?

Absolutely! The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme is designed so that you can use the techniques and tools no matter what path your birthing takes. The relaxation techniques we teach you are designed to help you stay calm throughout your birthing experience, and our aim is to inform and empower you to give you the confidence to make the decisions that are right for you and your baby on the day.

I also offer extra support regarding twins and multiple births; VBAC; Breech Babies; Induction; Confident C- Section; Birthing the Placenta; and Lotus Birth. This enables you to prepare for The Right Birth on The Day, no matter what turn your birthing takes.

Q. Will The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme definitely work for me?

The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme is like learning anything new – the more committed you are to learning, practising the techniques and listening to the MP3s, the more you will get out of the course. The more you practice the tools and techniques, the more natural they will feel on the day.

We are continually asking our clients for feedback on how the programme helped them. In our 2015 published statistics we were told the following by 144 clients who had returned birth outcome forms:

100% said they felt prepared and confident about their birth after they had completed their classes;

100% said they were able to successfully use what they had learnt on the course during their labour

and birth;

100% said they were able to make calm, informed choices;

100% said they know that their baby had the right birth on the day.

Q. Will I have a pain free birth after completing The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme?

The aim of this programme is not a completely pain-free or 'natural' birth (although that is possible).

It is to become expert in relaxation, to have a calmer mind - where you are not only in control of your emotions but understand them better as well, to achieve 'the right birth' on the day.

The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme does not promise or guarantee pain free birth or even that your birth will go exactly as planned but with the tools you learn during the programme, you will be prepared no matter what the day brings and you can achive 'the right birth' on the day.

We don’t like to use the word ‘pain’ as this can mean different things to different people. We all experience the concept of pain differently and describe it in different ways – what may feel uncomfortable to one person may feel like agony to another. We have no way of knowing how you experience pain and therefore we cannot guarantee you a pain free birth.

However we do know that a pain free birth is possible! We do know the physiology of birth and what causes pain and discomfort in labour. We do know that the more relaxed you are during birth the more comfortable you will feel. We will teach you the science behind this, make you aware of the reasons we may not be relaxed in labour (fear, tension, emotions) and provide you with the techniques to help you feel relaxed and as comfortable as possible. The more you practice what we teach you the more effective these techniques will be.

We do not focus on you achieving a pain free birth because this is setting an expectation and we don’t want you to feel that you have to meet any expectations. Our focus is on you having a positive and empowering birth experience, and for your baby to have the right birth on the day, no matter what path your birthing takes.

Some Wise Hippo Statistics

  • Around 65-70% of mothers did not need any form of pain relief.
  • Around 20-25% of mothers used gas and air or some mild pain relief.
  • Around 5-10% needed medical intervention and still reported that even though their birth wasn't as planned, they still had positive birth experience.
